Donald L Long

Donald Lester Long, 81, of Ashley passed away peacefully Thursday evening, August 15, 2024 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born October 15,1942 on Warrensburg Road in Delaware County to the late Murray Donald Long and Margaret (Morris) Long.

Don graduated in 1962 from Scioto Valley High School in Ostrander, Ohio. After graduation he joined the United States Army and proudly served with the 101st Airborne until his honorable discharge in 1965.

Don was employed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Division starting as an Equipment Operator 3. In 1986 he became the Building Construction Superintendent for his crew. He retired in 1995.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed spending time outdoors and with his family. Don did not know a stranger and would continually annoy Sandee with his chatting with everyone he met. He was a member of the Delaware Antique Farm Machinery Club and American Legion Post 518 in Ashley, Ohio.


Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 58 years, Sandra (Hull); daughters, Kara Long (Laura Taylor) of Coos Bay, Oregon and Kori (Ryan) Southers of Ashley, Ohio; granddaughter, Evelyn Mary Southers of Ashley, Ohio; brother-in-law Robert Hull of Marion, Ohio, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many close friends who have many fond memories.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother Harry Long and his sisters Avonne Long, (Esther) Sister David Marie Long, Amy Louise Ziegler and Doris Martin.

A graveside service will be held at Ashley Union Cemetery at 9800 Ashley Road, Ashley, OH 43003 at 4:00 pm, Wednesday, August 21, 2024. THE Reverend Terry Thompson (cousin) of Houston, Texas will lead the graveside service.

All are welcome to attend and are invited to a Celebration of Life gathering that will be held immediately after the graveside service at the Oxford Township Hall located at 5125 Shoemaker Road, Ashley, OH, until 8:00pm.
