HURON — Walter Mengert Evans, age 86, passed away following a lengthy battle with COPD on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2021.
Mr. Evans was the husband of the late Virginia Conley Evans; father of Stephen W. (Pamela) Evans and Carol (Brian) Higgins; grandfather of Sarah Evans Bogue, Andrew Higgins,] and Alexander Higgins; great grandfather of, Bentley and Christian Bogue.
Mr. Evans was born in Moundsville, West Virginia to J. Walter Evans (Audrey Stater Williams) and Katherine Mengert Sullivan and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Evans graduated from Columbus North High School in 1953 and proudly participated immediately and in Polar Bear alumni activities. He joined the Marine Corps in 1954 and in 1959 graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and wildlife management.
Mr. and Mrs. Evans married in 1959 and later relocated to Huron, Ohio to continue his career as a Law Enforcement Agent with the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife, Lake Erie Division. Mr. Evans retired from ODNR in 1985 and opened a charter fishing business on Lake Erie.
Mr. Evans was a long-time member of several Masonic Lodges in Port Clinton and Sandusky for many years. He was an active member of Rockwell Springs Trout Club. Mr. Evans spent 18 years as a principal care giver for his wife following her aneurysm. He exhibited a calmness, compassion, and strength of character during this time that is beyond description.
